We look forward to celebrating members of Dell Medical School's Class of 2027 during their White Coat Ceremony. Students will promise to keep patient care at the center of everything they do — in front of family, friends, clinician mentors and community members who will support them through the next four years and beyond. We're grateful to Michael and Susan Dell for gifting a white coat to each Class of 2027 student.

HISTORY

The first White Coat Ceremony occurred in 1993 at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Arnold Gold, a University of Texas at Austin alumnus and Columbia professor of neurology and pediatrics, noted that the existing practice of having students take the Hippocratic oath at the end of their medical training was four years too late. The Gold Foundation instituted the White Coat Ceremony to emphasize humanism in medicine at the very start of medical education.
